Get to know Mittweida

Comfortable by train

The Mittweida train station is only ten minutes walk from the campus (buses are also available). Once you reach the train station, you can head north to Leipzig (1.5 hours) or Berlin (3 hours) or south to Chemnitz (20 minutes). The connection to Dresden is another hour. For people who travel a lot, it is also possible to get timetable information via an app. The "DB Navigator" and the "ÖPNV Navigator" are recommended.

Pro-tip: With the JungeLeuteTicket (Young People's Ticket) from the Mittelsachsen transport association, you can travel all over Mittelsachsen for just 48 euros a month. The ticket is valid around the clock and is suitable for daily commuting as well as for excursions or visits home.

With your own car

Carpool commuting is often an alternative to public transport. Mittweida is not directly on the motorway, but it’s close, so all drivers can enjoy a short overland drive to get to the university. We do not recommend parking in supermarket car parks. However, you can find free parking at the Schwanenteich or Leisniger Straße.

Stay inside? Not in Mittweida! In addition to the university's diverse offerings such as theatre, sports and e-sports, there are a number of other free-time activities in the immediate surroundings.

In winter

The highest town in Germany, Oberwiesenthal, is only 1.5 hours away. Oberwiesenthal attracts with an expansive view of the region and slopes for advanced as well as beginner skiers and snowboarders. The neighboring peak of Keilberg (Klinovec) doubles the number of runs. Once you've reached the end of the slopes, you can refuel your energy reserves with spirelli, schnitzel or mulled wine. Skis or snowboards can be rented there on site.

In summer

Grab a picnic blanket and enjoy the sun in the newly redesigned Schwanenteich Park. A bike ride to the nearby Rossau Forest is also recommended. You can also take a nice spin there on your inline skates. Next to Mittweida's public open-air swimming pool is a skateboarding park. If you want to swim without the crowds, the Torfgrube forest pond is a nice option. It takes only 20 minutes to walk from Bahnhofstraße to the relaxing natural surroundings. A short drive north of Mittweida, the Zschopau river forms a lake with boating and kayaking and the dramatic castle of Kriebstein perched on the cliffs above the river.

Student club

Inconspicuous by day, but sensational by night. In the evening, it flashes and blinks colourfully from the windows. When you hear the students' voices singing loudly together, then you know: Karaoke is back in the student club, a HAVE TO for every student!

The whole week you can enjoy a programme in the club: On Mondays you can chat comfortably while drinking a one-Euro beer. On Tuesdays it gets wild on the dance floor and sometimes bands perform in the club. The programme is published weekly by e-mail or in the events calendar. By the way: The Student Club Mittweida is a registered association by students for students. Anyone who wants to help organise the nightlife can get actively involved here.

The club also includes a bar called the Schwemme, which is located separately, inside the Mensa (university cafeteria). There you can drink your well-deserved after-work beer or finish off the evening by playing a game of billiards or boardgames.

Dining out or cooking yourself? It doesn't matter - in Mittweida you'll find everything you need for your student life. Athos Greek restaurant on Technikumplatz, Dolomiti Italian restaurant as well as Doson Vietnamese bistro on Rochlitzer Straße, ice cream cafés at Markt and Schwanenteich. A café on Weststraße, or a kebab? Ordering food or going out to dine is not a problem. The best thing is that almost everything is reachable by foot.

This also includes two supermarkets (Lidl and Simmel) next to the university, a Sonderpreis hardware store right there as well, a Rossman drugstore, pharmacies, post office, cafés, grocery store, and organic market in the Mittweida Markt central historic market square, plus various doctors, dentists, hairdressers, bakeries, ice cream cafés, etc. And on Rochlitzer Straße, between the campus and the city centre, many interesting small shops selling vintage items, clothes, books, etc.
